I love being a father.
Yesterday was Father''s Day. We didn''t really do anything special, except go out to dinner with much of my family. My dad was there, mom too. Three of my four sisters were there too, but my brother was moving into his new house, so he wasn''t there. I am sure that just him moving out of mom and dad''s house is a gift enough for dad on Fathers day.
I say that tongue-in-cheek. I think if my father could have it his way, he wouldn''t have let any of us out of the house. I know how much he really loves us and loves having us around. Of course, my dad just was diagnosed (for the 3rd time) with lymphoma. He will be starting radiation soon, but a plan of attack has really not yet been determined.
We just don''t know how many more Father''s Day celebrations we are going to have left with my dad. While I am not a pessimist (sp?), I go into each FD first, being thankful for a great father (and mother too - but thats mothers day - ha), and second thinking that this may be the last one I have with my dad.
He''s fought this form of cancer twice before and won! He''s got other health problems too. And once, I didn''t think that he was going to recuperate. But he did!
I know that one day he will not be around to share the ups and be supportive of the downs that I have in my life. But until then, I am going to enjoy sharing my life''s victories and defeats with him, as well as just the mundane, day to day things - tomato plants, NASCAR, politics, sports and most importantly grandkids.
While I started out saying how great it is to be a father, I guess it is equally as great to be the son of a father that makes me so proud and feel so loved. And that is THE TRUTH!
